2010 CURWOOD'S GOT TALENT WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Deanna Nelson of Owosso Township is seen here performing "Unchained Melody" during the 2010 Curwood's Got Talent competition which won her the first place prize of $100 in the 18 and over category.
Top honors and $100 cash prize for the 17 and under category went to Laurel Hammis of Saginaw who performed "American Medley," a patriotic song and tap dance.

2010 ULTIMATE AIR DOGS RESULTS Barbara Finateri captured this awesome picture during the Ultimate Air Dogs Show of owner Jason Kidd and his Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Cowboy, taking his final jump as he took second place in the overall score of 24.07. 2010 CURWOOD FESTIVAL DESIGN WINNERS ANNOUNCED The Curwood Festival held two contests for the design of 2010 festival artwork. The first contest was for the design to be used on the Festival buttons. The second contest was for the design to be used on Festival prints and post cards.

CURWOOD FESTIVAL SAGA WRITING CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED
Thirteen-year-old Courtney Vanderhoof is the Grand Prize winner of the 2010 Curwood Saga Contest.
The Perry Middle School eighth g rader, daughter of Shannon Vanderhoof and Alan Vanderhoof, wrote the
winning story, "Prison or Privilege."
First place in the elementary division (fourth and fifth graders) was awarded to Gabriel Gaskin, son of
Carol Gaskin and the late John Gaskin, an 11 year old fifth grader at St. Paul Catholic School in Owosso,
for his story, "A Different World." Second place went to 9 year old Erin Mandley, daughter of Steven and
Cheryl Mandley, a home-schooled student who wrote, "By Sunset."
Madison Bachelder, daughter of Tom and Julie Bachelder, earned first place in the junior division with
"Escaping the Light." Madison, 14, is in eighth grade at Perry Middle School. JoAnna Lincoln, 13, took
second place with her story, "The Midnight Visitors." Daughter of Mark and JoAnn Lincoln, JoAnna
attends Corunna Middle School. The junior division is for grades six - eight.
In the senior division, first place went to Amanda Dedic, daughter of Mary and Rick Dedic, who wrote
"Nothing's Fair in Love and War." Amanda is a student at Laingsburg High School. Sam Whaley, son of
Beth Whaley, took second place with "The Turn-Around." Sam, 16, attends Perry High School. The
senior division is open to students in ninth - twelth grades.
The grand prize this year is an engraved Apple iPod touch. The first place winners in each division
received an engraved iPod nano. Second place finishers received $50.00 cash prize each. Dr. and Mrs.
Paul Rangi, Pinecrest Veterninary Hospital, generously sponsored this year's Curwood writing contest.
Winners were awarded their prizes at the Curwood Festival Board of Directors meeting at 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 7 at Owosso City Hall. Winners will also appear in the Curwood Heritage Parade at 2
p.m. on Saturday, June 5.
Books and Beans, formerly the Book Mark, of Owosso donated ten $10.00 gift certificates to authors of
stories earning honorable mention status. Honorable mentions went to: Jacob Steinacker, Louise
Peacock School (Corunna); Haylee Layne, Wilbur Bills School (Durand); Erica Zuniga, Keuhn-Haven
School (Montrose); Alexis Saunders, Elsa Meyer School (Corunna); Hannah McAvoy, Owosso Middle
School; Cassie Alford, Perry Middle School; Delaney Atkinson, Laingsburg Middle School; Joy Rhine,
Owosso High School; and Christian Laidler, Perry High School.
In all, 112 entries were received from 20 schools in 16 communities for the 2010 contest. Chairman
Glenda Caszatt commented, "The judges were pleased with the quality of this year's stories and were
delighted to see such a flair for creative writing from so many of the area's young people. Many stories
followed the Curwood Festival's theme, ' Fantasy and Fiction ' while others reflected different topics. The
winning stories will be published on an 'Owosso Independent's' web page at

online and read the talented work that our local youth produce."
